Last April, there was a surprising turnout for the top posts. This month is also quite surprising, because the list is populated by references to mainstream and not so mainstream culture.
Yes, I know there has been a lot of times when people have pointed out that my wide interests (especially in music) are weird, and I almost feel like a half-breed because I’m not a purist about genres and bands, I’m so sorry if I don’t know David Bowie’s full discography. For example, eventhough I visit Daytrotter for the latest Indie Bands, I still like good ol’ pop songs, and you may hear a few reggae/bossa nova/country/Broadway music on Wacky.
This music selection behaviour may be perceived as a reflection of Indecision + Fear of Commitment (I still don’t know what I want in my life, therefore I dabble into everything) and/or an underlying Attention Deficit Disorder + Lack of Commitment (Because I easily get tired/sick/uninterested ergo, I don’t take accountability). I just realized I made an analysis of my personality based on my musical tastes!
Anyway, I have always been the type of person who believes that Music has the power to stir in us emotions, it has the power to relate itself to a certain experience in your life and even let you feel emotions that you’ve never felt before.
In relating to life experiences, don’t you notice that whenever you’re heartbroken, in the context of romantic relationships, it seems like EVERY SONG you hear on the radio was especially written FOR YOU? We all have soundtracks to our lives, we create playlists – Break-Up playlists, Pound the Pavement playlists, Rainy Day playlists, songs can take us time travel, songs can pick our spirits up, songs can even influence our thinking patterns.
If I concentrated on only a few genres and shunning others because they’re low-brow/high-brow, I would miss out on songs that can potentially impact me. I have not been a fan of Broadway, but recently I have been listening to the Legally Blonde OBC songs, there were songs that inspired me (What You Want), songs that made me laugh and feel sad at the same time (Serious) and songs that I feel best describes my life (So Much Better, Find My Way).
Being open minded has always been what I’ve strived for, but after opening myself to new bands/different genres, I weed out what I listen to. I am a very impressionable person, my defenses have been easily torn down. I’m aware of the power of music in my life, that’s why I need to discipline myself with the kind of materials that I expose my mind to (movies, books, songs). No obscene lyrics, no lyrics that don’t agree with my beliefs, and there are just some songs that you really don’t feel good deep down when you’re listening to it. It’s not about the genre, it’s about the content and message of the songs that I’m careful to discern.
And so, here are the top posts for May 2008:
5.I Dig Pushing Daisies - Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Kristin Chenoweth…I am still salivating over this show. Haha…so I refuted the ADD part, oh well!
4. Scientifically Proven Benefits of Keeping A Journal - I am so glad that one of my posts about my passions finally made it to the monthly top countdown! As Oscar Wilde once said, “I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train”
3. She and Him Volume 1 - Just an update, aside from Black Hole, my next favourite is I Thought I Saw Your Face Today! I hope there’ll be a Volume II!
2. A Beautiful Mess - In close second is the We Sing We Dance We Steal Things post! Aside from Lucky and A Beautiful Mess, I also recommend listening to Live High and oh! The song I’m Yours is ten times better than the first release one! (Which I believe people say was a leak? I am not sure). This guy’s super talented!
And, the post which received top views this month (of which I’m so proud of!) is *drum roll please*
1.I Will Possess Your Heart - From DCFC’s newest album, Narrow Stairs :) . And I’m especially proud of this post because, Billi bought their CD because of my incoherent fan blabbing! Haha…maybe I do have a salesperson gene! It’s nice to know that (1) Someone had faith in my musical taste and (2) Word of Mouth can really move people into action. Even if the bass intro is soooo long the wait is worth the while. Now, if only I could get to see them perform live!
My blogging juice is finally replenished, expect more posts to amuse, shock, inspire and make you laugh!
LOVE LOVE LOVE,
Elle
